277. 4Qs with Wyatt Bunce & Willow Hamilton

What are the 4Q’s?  (1) Favorite films, top 3. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out.

Writer/producer/lead actor Wyatt Bunce and director/producer Willow Hamilton brought their film “Killer Whales” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film – Comedy.  Wyatt also took home the award for Best Lead Actor- Comedy at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2022!  I could not let these two hop off of Zoom until they answered the 4Qs listed above.

276. Willow Hamilton, Wyatt Bunce & Thom Reidy “Killer Whales”

Willow Hamilton, Wyatt Bunce & Thom Reidy brought their film “Killer Whales” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film – Comedy.  You know what I didn’t say to them during this podcast?  As a festival programmer who sees over a thousand indie films per year, I can say with complete confidence that a feature length comedy is the most difficult mountain to climb.  And “Killer Whales” is a smart, hilariously absurd feature film with great performances and underneath it all is a brilliantly directed arthouse film just waiting for you to catch it.

So catch it!  The film is released digitally the same day as this podcast!  Go to @killerwhalesmovie on Instagram to learn more or hit linktr.ee/killerwhalesmovie. And you know what?  Please watch this film and then give it a great review!  Great indie films deserve great reviews.

DIF Review: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Jiyan: La vie

Rating: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

What makes the film “Jiyan: La vie” so special?  This film was made by a filmmaker who worked intimately with refugees and this experience inspired him to make a film about their lives.  yes, it is fictionalized, but in every way this story is true to life about the challenges that people face when forced to flee a war-torn nation.  Yet the story is told with humor, authenticity, and even features a touch of romance.  I personally cannot imagine a mature, intelligent adult not appreciating this breathtaking film.

DIF Review: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Killer Whales

Rating: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

What do I love most about this film?  Everything.  It’s smart, hilarious, and entertaining from start to finish.  But what makes “Killer Whales” truly wonderful is that every character in this film is insane, completely insane.  And that is why they all seem like real people on a series of cinematic adventures.  The truth is that our planet is filled with crazy people doing crazy things and “Killer Whales” nails it.  I guess that I also have to mention that the writing, acting, and directing are superb; which I thought was obvious because you cannot accomplish a brilliant, whimsical film without those elements.

DIF Review: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Bone Cage

Rating: 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

“Bone Cage” is a remarkably powerful Indie film.  Brilliantly acted and superbly directed, you can add to the list wonderful cinematography that takes you into the heart of rural Nova Scotia.  Based upon an award winning play, this film delivers exactly what Indie film fans love; an honest, authentic presentation of life in a world that rarely makes it to the screen.
