2018 Award Winners Announced

The juries deliberated and debated… and finally decided.  Sincerely, all 36 films that screened at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival this year were great.  Being an Official Selection at SOFF truly means something.  We do not select films based on recognizable actors, social media followers, and or large local fanbases.  We select the films based solely on quality and we could not be more proud of the quality of this year’s Official Selections.

But film festival protocol demands that we give out awards.  This year we expanded the awards by adding the Filmmakers Awards to the Grand Jury Prizes and Audience Award Winners.  The Filmmakers Awards are given in the Narrative Short category and are selected by the Filmmakers Board, a panel of fifteen filmmakers whose films have been Official Selections in previous festivals.

Episode 72: Varun Raman & Tom Hancock

Transmission.  Transmission is a film that you MUST SEE.  This film is a brilliant work of art from Varun Raman & Tom Hancock; a young team out of Manchester, England (though they’ve moved since) who studied film on their own, wrote a pile of scripts and then managed to put together a team and a cast to make something special.

They weren’t able to attend the Sherman Oaks Film Festival when we screened Transmission in 2017, but the joy of running this podcast is that it gave me a reason to get on Skype and chat with this amazing filmmaking team for a few hours.

Besides being a pair of promising artists, Varun and Tom are also incredibly good guys.  Talking to them was like hanging out with friends.  I have no doubt that you will love listening to this podcast and hearing how they got their film made and what they plan to do next.

But first… watch Transmission and then listen to the interview.

Seriously… you MUST WATCH THIS FILM… watch it on the biggest screen you can find.. and click the heart in the corner to “like” it.

Episode 71: DIF4Q with Jonah Mazer

Jonah Mazer, Ethan Howard, & Jeff Howard at the Sherman Oaks Street Fair

Jonah Mazer is a director and cinematographer whose filmography keeps growing and growing… and he’s in High School.  His excellent short film Life After screened at Film Invasion Los Angeles in June 2018 and he approached me at that festival to ask if he could do some work for the next fest.  I took him up on it and he was a huge help at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival that November.  Jonah came on board the Sherman Oaks Film Festival team and was a great help.  And the jury also selected his newer short film I Am An Artist with its remarkable drone cinematography as an Official Selection at SOFF 2018.

But we had to have some fun, too, so he came in to record a DIF4Q podcast.

Also, if you want to see some of his work, check out Jonah’s YouTube and Vimeo.
