Episode 51: Mikhael Bassilli

If I was to use one word for filmmaker Mikhael Bassilli it would be industrious.  Just wait until you hear his story.

Mikhael just cannot stop creating, whether it is a business, a screenplay, a film, or a structure to make all of that happen.  But I don’t want to give too much away before you hear this interview.  Needless to say, Mikhael completely surprised and impressed me during this talk.

For the record, Mikhael’s short film Immersion, the opening film at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2017, is not available online yet.  I’m looking forward to when he releases it online, but he still has a few film festivals coming up.  We managed to avoid sharing any spoilers in this interview.

Episode 50: DF4Q with Miri Stone

What is DF4Q?  It’s the Discover Film Four Questions.

    • Name your favorite film of all time (limit 3)
    • Name a film you think is underrated
    • Name a film you think is overrated
    • Name a lesser-known film that you think people should seek out

Miri Stone wrote and directed The Hunter which opened the festival at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016.  The Hunter is a beautifully made film that takes the fantasy genre and offers up some surprises.  I had a hunch she would have some pretty interesting favorites, and she did not disappoint.

Episode 49: Miri Stone

The first time I ever programmed a film festival was Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016.  The first film that screened was The Hunter.  Which means that my first  Q&A with (as the Q, not the A) was Miri Stone.  Like all Q&A’s, we only had around 10 minutes to talk, so this filmmaker from Seattle with a New Zealand accent who made an incredibly original short film remained a mystery to me.  She’s not a mystery any longer!

Miri would have been one of the first interviews on this podcast, but we waited until The Hunter became available online.  And if you look to the right, you will see that she came down from Seattle to open the festival with her newborn child.  Talk about a magical way to begin a festival!

The Hunter is a beautifully made film and I’d always wondered what was behind it.  Miri shares where it comes from and more.  When you hear her history, you will clearly see that her entire life has primed her to make inventive, fantastical films.

Before you listen to the podcast… watch The Hunter.
