Outstanding Films: How To Get A Boyfriend<\/a>, The Man and Mel<\/a><\/p>\n

A message from FILA programmer Jeff Howard:<\/h3>\n

Every year it’s a challenge for us to look at the jury votes and hand out awards.\u00a0 Invariably, I see some things that bother me.\u00a0 This is especially because I watch every film a second time with an audience at the festival, while the majority of the jury members do not.\u00a0 In 2019, I was very happy with the award winners but I noticed two things.\u00a0 One, the wonderful How To Get A Boyfriend<\/em> was a runner up in several categories including writing, directing, and acting.\u00a0 I get it; it’s a dark comedy steps across the line and slips into gore.\u00a0 Not for everyone but it’s GREAT.\u00a0 Programmer’s Prize to the rescue.\u00a0 Two, the remarkable film\u00a0The Man and Mel<\/em> only won awards for its actors.\u00a0 That’s another thing I couldn’t let happen.\u00a0\u00a0The Man and Mel\u00a0<\/em>is wonderfully written, artfully directed, and beautifully shot.\u00a0 So it gets a Programmer’s Prize, too.<\/p>\n
